Culinary Tourism Hub

Food tourism is a growing market segment internationally. In 2009, €2 billion was spent on food and drink by tourists; in fact €2 of every €5 spent by a tourist is on food. An area’s hospitality and food/gastro tourism sector is the very foundation of an excellent visitor experience.

Recognising this, the Board of Meath Partnership has recently approved plans to invest up to €1 million of LEADER funding in culinary tourism in Co. Meath.  Central to this plan is the creation of a Culinary Visitor Centre designed to capture the attention of the growing numbers of visitors who have developed a passion for local and artisan food products.  ‘Culinary tourism’, says Michael Ludlow ‘is about much more than the product itself, research tells us that visitors to County Meath want to feel part of the community and to engage with the community during their stay in the County’.

This project, is in conjunction with Roscommon LEADER Partnership and aims to explore the potential, feasibility and viability of the establishment of a Culinary Tourism Visitor Centre and Demonstration Hub at keys location within Meath and Roscommon. It is envisaged that this hub will function as a driver of culinary and food tourism activity and will be a focal point in terms of providing a Centre of Excellence dedicated to the enhancement of skills amongst food tourism providers.  It will also be a tourism visitor centre where visiting tourists can acquire traditional Irish and artisan food skills as part of a visit to the counties.
